Craft by World Market

Craft by World Market
Cost Plus World Market is one of my favorite stores for kitchen accessories, home goods, and unique foods from around the world. This year World Market introduced a new way to shop for unusual, authentic, hand crafted goods from around the world with CRAFT by World Market Collection. Each month a small collection of handcrafted goods are released by artisans, crafters and designers from around the world – they are available for pre-order for a short time period. If enough people pre-order an item, the product is brought to life. Kind of like mini-kickstarter, except every item is limited edition and one of a kind.

These are some of the pieces that are in the collection for June. I'm loving the Cotton Modol Scarf, it merges traditional design with vibrant colors and patterns. Check out this video below for more details.

I'm definitely excited to see what's to come with this new program. It's a new innovative way to approach the way we shop. What do you think? Check out the program here.

Pine and Cranes | Los Angeles, CA / blog.jchongstudio.com
A couple weeks ago Jeanne from Shop Sweet Things came to visit for some LA fun and to celebrate Will of Bright Bazaar's brand new book (for all you color lovers - definitely pick one up for yourself). I've been excited to check out Pine and Crane the newest hippest Taiwanese restaurant in Silverlake, so we decided to spend the day in Silverlake before meeting up with our friends.

I really loved our visit to Pine and Crane – Vivian Ku, the owner/chef kindly welcomed us into her restaurant which was named after her grandfather's noodle company. I loved hearing her story – Vivian has worked in various restaurant in the past and then studied at CIA to get a better understanding of cooking techniques. The produce at the restaurant comes from her very own family's farm nearby. Sure you can go to SGV for some delicious Taiwannesse food but I can promise you that the experience at Pine and Crane will feel totally different.

We ordered - all of the cold appetizers that they had for the day which rotate daily, scallion pancakes, spicy shrimp wontons, beef roll, dan dan noodles, and mapo tofu. Yes you read that correctly we got all of that for lunch, the portion sizes are good we wanted to try an assortment of dishes so we got more than enough to fill our bellies for lunch and then some for later. I loved all the dishes but my stand out favorite were the spicy shrimp wontons. Best wontons ever (Vivian what kind of magic sauce you got in there!?). Also I have to say I LOVE the milk tea at Pine and Crane the Passionfruit black tea which was also quite delicious.

Besides having great food you can see from the photos they did a great job with the creative and decor - the ambiance feels so different from any other Taiwanese restaurant you'll go to. If you're in LA stop by Pine and Crane today. Thanks to Vivian and Moonlyn for welcoming us into their space.

Tokyo Fried Chicken Co. | Los Angeles, California + Soy Glazed Carrots with Bacon

May 14, 2014

Tokyo Fried Chicken / blog.jchongstudio.com
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of meeting of Elaine, restaurant operations and Kouji, chef and owner of Tokyo Fried Chicken. I'm a fan of TFC so when they asked if I'd help capture the restaurant I couldn't say no! I had such a blast shooting with them getting to hear Kouji's story and of course chowing down on some tasty fried chicken.

The chicken is like a combination of Southern fried chicken and Japanese karaage chicken, flavored with soy, ginger and garlic served with ponzu sauce. My favorite is their spicy ponzu, I was lucky enough to take some home but you can also get your own by stopping by their restaurant.

The side dishes also have Japaneses and Southern influences like soy glazed carrots with bacon, curried cream corn, truffle edamame and of course some mac and cheese. My favorite things to order include the crispy fried chicken skins, the dinner set with mac and cheese and sauteed lotus root and I love their Yuzu lemonade!

Orn Hansen | Long Beach

February 18, 2014

Orn Hansen / blog.jchongstudio.com
It's been a while since I've done a local small shop. Quite frankly I sort of ran out of local shop ideas, so if you're a reader and have some long beach favorites please let me know! Anyhow, last fall Orn Hansen popped into town, right next to Lord Windsors. It's a welcoming addition to this Long Beach corner and it excites me to see shops like these pop up in town. Orn Hansen caters to both men and women from clothing and jewelry to handmade soaps and leather goods. Everything in the store is made in the US and even a good handful of local LB artist are represented in the store. Be sure to check it out on your next visit to Long Beach!

just discovered this new gem in irvine – love and whiskey. a great boutique in tucked away in park place. yes you heard me a cute boutique in irvine! they carry an assortment of women's and men's clothing – a mix of local and domestically produced and even cause-driven brands like 31 bits and krochet kids. one of my favorite things they carry is tanner good – the most incredibly crafted leather goods. i had the pleasure of chatting with owners sarah and mike on my recent visit. such a pleasure visiting their shop!

Love and Whiskey / blog.jchongstudio.com
tell us a little bit about love vs whiskey and how it began, what were you doing before you opened your own retail space?
sarah - before opening our own retail space, i worked 19 years in retail management for companies like nike women, d & g, bally, st. john and tse cashmere. love & whiskey began when we were asked to expand our first location deer lovely/whiskey tango 1977 into a 2nd location. we believe in evolving as a company, so we didn’t want to do the exact same thing as our first retail space. we wanted it to be refined. we combined the names of our original stores into love & whiskey and began curating our favorite brands... some old and some new.

what can people find at love vs whiskey, what makes you different than other retailers?
a unique selection of nicely curated items from a variety brands and local artists that changes and is updated frequently. people can also find whiskey tastings at our store every third thursday of the month. guests can pop in, enjoy a whiskey cocktail, and shop!

Love and Whiskey / blog.jchongstudio.com
whats the most important thing you’ve learned since opening your business?
that i am a really good buyer and to be confident when i feel strongly about new styles or when i want to take a risk.

what has been your favorite moment so far?
our favorite moments are when clients comment that there is finally a “cool” shop in irvine. irvine is known for everything looking boring and the same. we set out to be different so it is nice to be noticed for that exact thing.
