The Mill | San Francisco

A couple of weeks ago I made a quick trip to SF of course I had to stop at my usual favorites Tartine Bakery and B Patisserie but I've heard a few good things about The Mill so decided it was time to pay a visit. They are known for their bread and toast! I believe their toast selection changes daily, I can't recall the exact toast we had - something with brown sugar and maybe honey? It was tasty but it doesn't beat my Tartine Bakery or B Patisserie though I really love the atmosphere of The Mill.

It's big and bright and filled with natural light. A large communal table and smaller tables on the side, perfect place to sit and read a book or get some work done. While the one toast I tried didn't blow my mind, I look forward to trying some of their other toast combinations next time I am in town.

Sightglass Coffe | San Francisco

July 18, 2013

Sightglass Coffee / blog.jchongstudio.com
growing up i used to have a dream that i would one day open my own coffee shop with a home/market shop on the side. it would be a place for people to meet and work as well as a place to buy tasty eats and accessories for the home. the dream sort of passed but if it ever came back, i'd want to the space to look like sightglass coffee.

i instantly fell in love with the space when i was visiting on my last trip to san francisco. it's an open space with two floors, filled with lots of natural light. i had some coffee with a friend but i lingered and just enjoyed the space. somehow being there just made me feel inspired – do you ever feel like that about a shop you're visiting?

Dandelion | San Francisco

 / Dandelion Chocolate
dandelion chocolate was one of my favorite places i visited on my last trip to san francisco. they are a bean to bar chocolate factory with a newly opened location in the mission. they use quality chocolate and nothing else – besides the fact that they have delicious chocolate their attention to detail is superb. i absolutely adore their letterpress packaging and they still wrap and label their chocolate by hand.

their staff is super friendly and knowledgeable – and explained their process to me. their chocolate factory is open to the public wednesday – sunday from 10-8pm. you can pick up some delicious chocolate bars or try some of their other chocolate treats.

Bar Tartine | San Francisco

June 25, 2013

Vietnamese Chicken Salad / Bar Tartine
as i mentioned before, tartine bakery is one of my favorite spots – i am quite certain that i made my friend walk to tartine from hayes valley every single day i was there, literally. so i've been wanting to try bar tartine for some time, of course my schedule was jammed packed with a full eatinerary (i swear i never get hungry when i travel because i am always stuffing my face!). i wanted to try their dinner, but unfortunately we couldn't make it happen this time so we stopped by for a quick 'snack' around lunch time.

B Patisserie | San Francisco

i think one of my favorite things i've ever ate was a pain au jambon aka ham and cheese croissant from tartine bakery it's absolutely amazing, heaven in your mouth. it's filled with layers and layers of goodness i mean look at this. i am surprised i've never done a post on tartine's pain au jambon, i guess because i'm too busy eating to take lots of photos... but anyhow this post isn't about tartine its about b. patisserie.

b. patisserie is a fairly new pastry shop in san francisco's pacific height neighborhood. the shop is adorable and of course filled with decadent eats which i had to try... we ordered a tartine, kouign amann, valhrona chocolate cookie, and the grande macaron. everything was really tasty but the star was the kouign amann (pronounced queen ahman) – it's a round cake made with bread dough, filled with layers of butter and sugar. the flavors inside reminded me of when my grandmother used to put butter and sugar on baguettes for me when i visited her in france. the kouign amann from b. patisserie is simply wonderful, definitely one of the best pastries i've had!

while in oakland maia showed me around her neighborhood and we stopped into several adorable shops one of those was marion and rose workshop. i loved the space – large windows allowing some bright beautiful light to come into the shop. they carry an assortment of home goods and accessories selected from innovative designer and artisans. everything they carry has a handmade, high quality touch both from locally in oakland as well as other places from around the country.

p.s. they have an online shop too!

i've got a few places to share from my recent trip to san francisco coming up over the next few weeks for you, to start my lunch stop with maia at miss ollies in oakland!

miss ollies is a cute casual lunch/dinner spot new to oakland, focussing on carribean/american inspired dishes. apparently fried chicken tuesdays and saturdays are a hit and a popular choice however it was thursday so i opted with the special of the day, oxtail w/ rice and plantans and maia ordered the pulled pork. both dishes were delicious and didn't make me feel sad i missed out on the fried chicken. though next time i am around i would like to try this chicken everyone keeps talking about.

while i was in san francisco a few weeks ago a few friends and i had brunch at plow (thanks for the recommendation aaron!). tiny but beautiful space. definitely recommend it for brunch, and i would recommend going in a smaller group so you don't have to wait as long. i ordered the plow breakfast, jon's fried egg sandwich is pictured below and oh man the fried potatoes are so delicious.

Tartine Bakery

December 05, 2011

TartineTartinewhile i was in san francisco for thanksgiving i definitely did some indulging and had some wonderful things from tartine bakery. my friend has been raving about their ham and cheese croissant she says it is one of the best thing she ever ate and the morning bun was listed as 7x7 top 100 things you had to try before you die. so you can't go without trying those things right? and just because we were being thankful... some banana cream pie! everything was quite tasty the layers in the croissant were just buttery, flakey, awesomness!

Straw SF

July 05, 2011

hope everyone had a wonderful 4th. i had a great time with some good friends. on day one of our sf trip we had brunch at straw a carnival themed restaurant. i loved the decor of the place and it had a bunch of great tunes jamming over the speakers. we started out with jenga french toast – which wasn't actually that delicious but definitely fun to photograph. i ordered the ranchers reserve [bottom left] and a friend ordered the bearded lady [bottom right]. The food was alright (i'd recommended the bearded lady if you go) - but the service and atmosphere were even better!
