last week some i drove down to san diego to visit some old friends who were visiting from atlanta, it's so great to reconnect. with facebook, email and everything social on the internet these days it's easier to stay in touch but being in the same place just feels totally different! we spent most of our time at home hanging out with their little kids but we did make a lunch stop at station tavern and then walked into this adorable shop called progress along the way.

progress carries unique fun finds for everyone. you can find jewelry, magazines, kitchen goods, toys, paper goods and even furniture. one of my favorite things in the shop were these typography map posters. it looks like they have an online shop coming soon for those of you who aren't in the area but until then check out their blog for updates!

well technically canvas shop is located in seal beach not long beach, but i am in love with this store. i stumbled upon this gem a few weeks ago while i was shopping at the adjacent floral shop. at first the name and surf boards in the front of the store threw me off – but once i was inside i was so thrilled to find so many of my favorite things.

PrepKitchen Little Italy [Part Two]

February 15, 2012

on the way to the restroom at pkli you will pass a bunch of plates, all wil these funny animal portraits - they all made me chuckle.

of course can't write about prepkitchen without talking about what we had for lunch! so yummy pork tacos with grilled pineapple! we also tried a bunch of sandwiches including turkey sandwich, the cubana and the tuna sandwich – the tuna was our favorite. of course no lunch is complete until you have some dessert! salted caramel fudge brownie with ice cream and some new york style cheesecake (not pictured).

PrepKitchen Little Italy [Part One]

February 14, 2012

over the weekend i was finally able to check out new location of prepkitchen in little italy. i had high expectations, after seeing all of the tweets online i was so excited. i definitely was not disappointed – they did a spectacular job with the new space, beautiful light, nice wood work, with all sort of little details that i absolutely loved. pictured above is their 'private' dining space which was so lovely, i litereally had to take a moment to soak it all in.

see those business cards, yep the carved out some books to put those cards in - so clever!

perhaps one of my favorite touches of the restaurant were mason jars filled with herbs and spices. i wonder how much maintenance those need. more photos to come tomorrow – stay tuned!

PrepKitchen

November 22, 2011

PrepKitchenalthough i've been to san diego several times now, and i've been given lots of food recommendations for the city - i always find myself back at whisknladle. this time sarah and i decided to try their sister restaurant prepkitchen. we headed down to the la jolla location for lunch. the restaurant small but absolutely charming, with a covered patio as well as a small indoor communal dining area.

PrepKitchenPrepKitchen
i ordered the beet, tangerine, goat cheese & avocado salad – sounds weird right? nope freaken amazing. sarah ordered the winter squash panini, squash, gruyere, quince mostarda, pear & fried sage – as soon as we took a bite we kept talking about how we could whip up our own salad version of this delightful panini.

WhisknLadle

August 03, 2011

since i was in san deigo, i didn't want to miss the opportunity to dine at whisknladle again. sarah and i had such a wonderful experience there i wanted to take my sister and some other san diego friends. this time for dinner. we were not disappointed. to start us off we got the cutting board (cured meats, cheese, spreads, and pickles), flat bread, bone marrow, and scallops [i know some starters right, but we wanted to try so many things!] the favorite among the table was the flat bread and scallops but everything was so good. the flat bread was super super thin, like a thin tortilla chip topped with heirloom tomatoes, some sort of corn puree, and well it was pretty freaking amazing.

for dinner we ordered the summer salad, squid ink linguine, and the hanger steak. every dish was well prepared, fresh and best of all delicious. now, lets take moment to admire this hanger steak. hello happiness!

for dessert [not pictured] we ordered the stone fruit pie with sweet corn ice cream and the jojo cookie plate. our tummies left happy to say the least.

there are many things i love about whisknladle, besides the food, the ambiance is great. i love every bit of sunshine i can get, so their outdoor patio seating is wonderful. it's fine dining without the fluff. although i've only dine there a few times their staff never disappoints, they are knowledgeable, friendly and i even think they all share a passion for food. if your ever in the san diego area - be sure to check them out! - next up for me is their sister restaurant prep kitchen!

Whisknladle

June 21, 2011

whisknladleone of the my favorite highlights from the weekend was getting brunch at whisknladle in la jolla. we sat out on the patio – and the day was absolutely perfect. we shared the porchetta + egg tartine and the ricatta lemon meyer w/blueberry pancakes. the porchetta was perfect and one of my favorite dishes from the entire weekend – a savory open faced french toast with hint of maple syrup. the pancakes were also delightful not too sweet as some may think – they were both the best brunch duo. the service was one of the best i've had in a while (ask for colin!) – i would definitely recommend it for anyone who is in the area.
