just discovered this new gem in irvine – love and whiskey. a great boutique in tucked away in park place. yes you heard me a cute boutique in irvine! they carry an assortment of women's and men's clothing – a mix of local and domestically produced and even cause-driven brands like 31 bits and krochet kids. one of my favorite things they carry is tanner good – the most incredibly crafted leather goods. i had the pleasure of chatting with owners sarah and mike on my recent visit. such a pleasure visiting their shop!

tell us a little bit about love vs whiskey and how it began, what were you doing before you opened your own retail space?
sarah - before opening our own retail space, i worked 19 years in retail management for companies like nike women, d & g, bally, st. john and tse cashmere. love & whiskey began when we were asked to expand our first location deer lovely/whiskey tango 1977 into a 2nd location. we believe in evolving as a company, so we didn’t want to do the exact same thing as our first retail space. we wanted it to be refined. we combined the names of our original stores into love & whiskey and began curating our favorite brands... some old and some new.

what can people find at love vs whiskey, what makes you different than other retailers?
a unique selection of nicely curated items from a variety brands and local artists that changes and is updated frequently. people can also find whiskey tastings at our store every third thursday of the month. guests can pop in, enjoy a whiskey cocktail, and shop!

whats the most important thing you’ve learned since opening your business?
that i am a really good buyer and to be confident when i feel strongly about new styles or when i want to take a risk.

what has been your favorite moment so far?
our favorite moments are when clients comment that there is finally a “cool” shop in irvine. irvine is known for everything looking boring and the same. we set out to be different so it is nice to be noticed for that exact thing.

when i first moved to california, in attempts to meet people and be active i thought i should pick up a sport, a california sport. it was between surfing and volleyball and those who know me well, know that i love my volleyball. choosing between the two was pretty easy as i can't swim and the water is cold (i guess the first reason is a good enough one!) even though im not a surfer, i appreciate the sport and fell in love with these beautiful boards. if i ever became a surfer i'd want one of these beauties.

since i don't know anything about surfboard, chad was kind enough to give me the rundown of the boards. their staff is knowledgeable and friendly – they also carry a mens clothing line too, you can purchase online.

i recently visited yoki shop *thanks to devon for the tip!* in newport beach – as described on their site "yoki shop is a place where shopping is not the only objective. it is a shop where just looking and being inspired is encouraged." and inspired was exactly how i felt. the products behind yoki shop are pretty unique, designer, jeff 'yoki' yokoyama and his team (just the three of them!) make every product you see in-house by hand all from re-purposed fabric like jerseys and beach towels. i was quite impressed with the quality of everything – how well can a hoodie be made up of an old beach towel and sweatshirt? pretty darn amazing! check out their website to check out all the goods or if your local, definitely check out their shop!

Oh Hello Friend / blog.jchongstudio.com
have you guys heard of oh hello friend the cute and craft blog of danni hong? she recently opened up her very own brick and mortar store in orange county! you can find an assortment of great gift ideas and vintage finds at very reasonable prices. i got the chance to ask danni some questions about the store and her blog, her is what she had to say!

can you describe the process of starting oh hello friend, what were you doing before you started?
starting oh, hello friend was a slow process and has been a labor of love. this year actually marks the 5th year we’ve been in business. i was working as a graphic designer when i started the blog and etsy shop.studying graphic design in college really helped in starting my own business since i could do all the design myself.

how did you expand from having an online shop to your very own brick and mortar?
we started selling at craft shows shortly after i started my shop on etsy. we did our first craft show in 2009. people have always asked us if we owned a shop. last year, we decided it was time to open a retaillocation and our shop opened in february 2013! our online presence is still very helpful and people who don’t live in the area still support us by ordering online.

i admit i don't have much of a green thumb but when i saw my friend lindsay instagram rolling greens i was intrigued and wanted to check it out. it's a beautiful space and definitely not your average nursery. they carried lots of things you'd find in a nursery but also home decor, furniture, kitchen goods and even a few jams and salts! they also offer classes for floral arrangement and terrariums. i've always loved the way terrariums look, i just might have to take a class!
