while i still think it's hard to find great eats in long beach there is one thing i know you can find in lb and that's unique vintage and retro items. blu button boutique is a women's fashion and accessories shop on 4th street. they carries an assortment of retro inspired clothing with a mix of vintage goods. if you could imagine modcloth.com's brick and mortar store this would be it. the owner esther kim is one of the friendliest and warmest shop owners i've met. every time i am in there she's always helpful and striking up a conversation. if you're ever in the area please do stop by and say hello!

are there any other shops you love to visit in long beach? i'd love to hear about them! i think i've covered my favorites.

Halibut with Mango Salsa

Halibut with Mango Salsa / blog.jchongstudio.com
i pick up a few magazines when i travel and subscribe to a food magazines at home but i find that most of the times i just salivate over the photos. i never really make anything from the magazines – i'm not quite sure why it is, perhaps it's because some of the recipes always look more challenging that i want for a simple meal at home. i found this grilled halibut recipe in time's issue of "what to eat now" – seemed simple and easy so i gave it a go!

Moroccan Baked Eggs

March 11, 2013

Moroccan Baked Eggs / blog.jchongstudio.com
after having breakfast at gjelina a few times, i am completely obsessed over their moroccan baked eggs so i wanted to take a stab at making a similar version at home. while i wouldn't say this is the same version it's pretty delicious and easy to make. if you're looking for an alternative breakfast option or want to jazz up your normal breakfast routine!

MOROCCAN BAKED EGGS
1 tablespoons coconut oil
4 eggs
1 16 oz can of crushed tomatoes
1 small onion, chopped
1 small bunch kale, chopped
4 – 6 garlic cloves, sliced into rounds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 red or green chili, seeded and thinly sliced
1/2 teaspoon hot smoked paprika
a pinch of cayenne
a pinch of saffron (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

1. pre-heat oven to 375ยบ. in a skillet* melt coconut oil over medium heat, add cumin seeds, onions, salt and pepper and cook until onions are translucent
2. add tomatoes, chili, garlic, paprika, cayenne and saffron and kale and let simmer for 10-15 minutes or until sauce has thickened. taste the sauce and add additional seasoning if necessary
3. transfer sauce* into an oven proof dish and make a small dip in each then and carefully break an egg into each divot.
4. bake for 8-12 mins or until the egg whites are set and yolk is still runny.

* you can also use an oven proof skillet from the start so you don't have to transfer your ingredients. i wanted to use my lodge mini server so i didn't use my cast iron skillet!

The Little Shop

i stopped by canvas shop over the holidays and spotted a new shop had opened up next door, appropriately titled "the little shop". what a little gem, despite the size they carry some wonderful unique home items. they have handmade goods from local artist and vintage finds at reasonable prices. one of my all time favorite things they carry are these amazing dinosaur planters that the owner taylor sell created, seriously how do you not love them? they don't have an online shop yet, but looks like an etsy site might be in the works - perhaps with a little nudge she might put some up for sale online for those who aren't local.
